NUCLEAR RECEPTOR TARGETED DRUGS
Retinoids and Rexinoids are small molecule drugs related to retinoic acid, which control expression of many types of genes through interaction with nuclear receptors. Retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and Retinoic acid X receptors (RXRs) are two of the nuclear receptors activated by retinoic acid and its isomers. Within RARs and RXRs there are three subtypes, designated RARα, β, and γ, and RXRα, β, and γ. Discovery of these families of nuclear receptors has led to seminal advances in the understanding of cancer biology; the pathophysiology of degenerative diseases of the central nervous system such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases; and the dysregulation of the immune system in autoimmune diseases.
